Healthcare epidemiology is a patient-centered field of science. Through research, education, and policy development, SHEA strives to ensure that healthcare delivered at the bedside is informed by the latest science to prevent and eliminate HAIs.

SHEA Infection Prevention Handout for Patients and Visitors

This printable, two-sided, z-fold brochure tells patients and visitors how they can help prevent healthcare-associated infections, and provides specific advice for the prevention of:

  • C. difficile
  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
  • Central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI)
  • Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP)
  • Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI)
  • Surgical site infections (SSIs)

Patient educators, hospitals, other facilities, and individuals are welcome to download, print, and distribute the guide. No changes may be made to the guide. It is written in English and Spanish in plain language, and has been cleared by CDC. This guide was created by SHEA and CDC in collaboration with the partnering organizations for the "Compendium of Strategies to Prevent HAIs in Acute Care Hospitals": IDSA, AHA, APIC, and the Joint Commission.

Patient and Family Guides for Family-Centered Residential Facilities

In partnership with the Ronald McDonald House Charities, Inc. (RMHC), SHEA developed a set of infection prevention guides to educate volunteers, patients, and family members staying in residential facilities. These guides, available for download free of charge, include:
